What New York requires

In New York, a learner permit is available starting at age 16. New York requires 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 at night before a teen can finish the supervised-driving stage of licensing.

The learner permit also has to be held for at least 6 months before a teen can move up to the next license stage in New York, so it's worth starting the log early.

A parent or guardian certifies the completed hours on the MV-262 Certification of Supervised Driving. There's no trip log to submit.

✓ Requirements verified on July 20, 2026 against New York's official DMV source.

Questions about New York requirements

Do I submit this log to New York?

No. New York has a parent or guardian certify your completed hours on the MV-262 Certification of Supervised Driving. Learner Log is your private record for tracking them, with no trip log to turn in.

How many of the hours have to be at night?

New York requires 15 of the 50 hours at night. Learner Log tracks daytime and nighttime minutes separately, so your night total is always current.

How long must the New York permit be held?

The configured New York licensing path requires the permit to be held for at least 6 months. Confirm the current timing with the licensing agency before applying.
