How to fill out Vermont’s VN-210 Driving Practice Log Sheet
The VN-210 is a folded booklet rather than a single grid. Rows run in three column-blocks — Column 1 on page 2, Column 2 on page 3, Column 3 on page 4 — and each block has its own total that feeds the one below it, ending in a Grand Total on page 4. Vermont asks for 40 additional hours of practice with at least 10 at night, and the sheet is handed to the DMV when you apply for a Junior Driver’s License, so the arithmetic on it is the part that gets read.

Copy the format from the sample the form prints
Above Column 1 the VN-210 shows a completed row of its own: 07/04/12, 10:00 a.m., Hill Starts, City - Daytime, 30 min., J.F.K. That single line settles the register for every column — a clock time rather than a duration in Time of Day, a named skill rather than a description, minutes rather than decimals.

Record one row per session, not per day
Each drive earns its own line, so an afternoon session and an evening one on the same date are two rows with the same date and different clock times. Time of Day takes the time the session began.

Name the skill and the environment separately
Skills Practiced is what you worked on; Driving Environment is where — residential, city, rural road, highway or interstate, a parking lot. The provider who supervised the session initials the row as it is filled in, which is why the column is headed Initials of Provider rather than Parent.

Carry the totals down the ladder
This is where the form is most often got wrong. Page 2 totals Column 1. Page 3 totals Column 2, repeats Column 1, and combines the two. Page 4 takes that combined figure, adds Column 3 and any attached sheets, and produces the Grand Total. Each figure is copied forward by hand; nothing on the booklet adds up on its own.

Have a parent or guardian complete page 1
Page 1 carries the driver’s name, address, date of birth, learner’s permit number and the date it was issued, then two questions for the parent or guardian: whether the child has ever been convicted of a motor-vehicle offence, and whether they certify the 40 additional hours including 10 at night. The certification is made under penalty of 23 V.S.A. §202 and §203, and it is signed and dated with the parent’s own licence number beside it.

Hand the booklet in, and do not lose it first
The form says both things plainly: it must be submitted to the DMV at the time of application for a Junior Driver’s License, and it is very important not to lose it. There is no duplicate on file anywhere — the booklet in your glovebox is the only record of the practice.

Take twenty minutes of residential practice beginning at 8:10 in the evening on January 5 — the second session that day, so the second row carrying that date.

Vermont defines nighttime as the period from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, so whether this 8:10 PM session counts toward the 10 night hours depends on the date as much as the clock. The row itself has no night column — the certification on page 1 is where the night total is asserted.
Where a VN-210 loses its totals
- Treating the three column-blocks as one long list and filling Column 3 on page 4 before Column 2 on page 3, which leaves the totals ladder stepping over an empty block.
- Totalling each column but never carrying the figures forward, so the Grand Total on page 4 shows one block’s practice instead of all of it.
- Putting a duration in Time of Day — the form’s own sample answers that column with “10:00 a.m.”, a clock time.
- Reaching 40 hours without being able to show that 10 of them fell between 30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise, which is the half of the certification a parent still has to sign.
- Losing the booklet, which the form warns about directly: there is no copy at the DMV, and the practice cannot be reconstructed without it.
What fills a VN-210 row, page by page
The export writes one row per drive, filling the three grids in the booklet’s own order — Column 1’s 25 rows, then Column 2’s 24, then Column 3’s 7 — and carries the totals through the ladder:

Everything in the parent or guardian block on page 1 stays blank — the convictions question, the 40-hour certification, the signature and the parent’s licence number are all theirs to complete.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the log have three separate columns?
They are one continuous list split across the booklet’s pages — Column 1 on page 2, Column 2 on page 3, Column 3 on page 4. Fill them in that order, because each column’s total feeds the next page’s subtotal and then the Grand Total.
What does “40 additional hours” mean?
Additional to driver education. The certification on page 1 asks a parent to confirm 40 further hours of behind-the-wheel practice beyond the course, with at least 10 of them at night.
How does Vermont define nighttime driving?
The form defines it on page 1: the period from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. A session that feels like evening in June may not qualify, and one in December often does.
Do I have to use a driving-log app?
No. The booklet mentions a free app as an alternative and notes that using it makes this form unnecessary, provided you print that log and bring it to the road-test appointment. A paper VN-210 filled in by hand remains entirely valid, and so does any other record you keep, as long as the sheet you hand in shows the practice.
Who initials each row?
The person who supervised that session — the column is headed Initials of Provider, so it follows whoever actually sat in the passenger seat rather than defaulting to one parent for the whole booklet.
