How to fill out Delaware’s Supervised Driving Log
Delaware’s log is not a standalone form — it sits inside the Parent’s Supervised Driving Program booklet, a coaching guide the log pages live at the back of. Two things about it catch people out. The certification is time-bounded: it attests to 50 hours of supervised driving during the first six months in the Graduated Driver License program. And the completed form does not go to the DMV — it goes back to the teen’s driver education teacher, before any unsupervised driving happens.

Give each row one side of the day
The Day/Night column is a pair of checkboxes on every row, so a row is day or night rather than both. A date with an afternoon drive and an evening one earns two rows carrying the same date — one with Day ticked, one with Night.

Answer Location of Practice at the level it asks
The header supplies its own examples — “ex. rural, highway”. A road type or an area is what it wants: residential, city streets, expressway. It is not asking where you went.

Fill Weather and Skills Practiced per row
Both describe that row’s driving, and both are the sort of thing that is impossible to reconstruct months later. Ten hours of the fifty have to be at night, and the weather column is where an examiner-facing record of conditions comes from.

Total each page, then the whole log
Each grid page carries a TOTAL for its own rows, and the back page adds a GRAND TOTAL across all of them. The form sets no unit for driving time; the export writes decimal hours throughout, so forty minutes reads 0.67 and the totals add up the same way. Filling it by hand, either convention works — just keep the rows and the totals in the same one.

Complete the teacher’s page and hand it back
The final page takes the student’s name, their high school and their teacher’s name, then a parent or guardian certifies the 50 hours and signs and dates it. The instruction above it is explicit: complete and sign the form and return it to the driver education teacher prior to any unsupervised driving.
A date on both sides of dark, as two rows
Say January 5 brings twenty minutes of residential practice in the afternoon and twenty more after dark. The Day/Night checkboxes cannot carry both, so the date takes two lines.

Splitting the date is what makes the ten night hours visible. A single row with both boxes ticked would record the same driving while leaving the night portion unprovable, which matters because the night requirement is the half people finish last.
What sends a Delaware log back from the teacher
- Ticking both Day and Night on one row for a date driven on both sides of dark, which hides the night hours inside a single undifferentiated figure.
- Mixing the two time conventions down the column — 0:20 and 0.33 are the same twenty minutes, but a sheet carrying both stops reconciling against its own TOTAL.
- Sending the completed log to the DMV, which is not where the form directs it — it names the driver education teacher, and asks that it arrive before any unsupervised driving.
- Leaving the high school and teacher’s name blank on the back page, when that page is the part the teacher files.
- Reaching 50 hours after the first six months of the GDL program have passed, when the certification is specifically about that window.
What fills the log, and what the teacher’s page needs
The export writes up to two rows per date — one for that date’s daytime driving and one for its after-dark driving:

The certification sentence and the parent or guardian’s signature and date are left blank — that attestation covers 50 hours completed within the first six months of the GDL program, which is not something a generated form can assert on anyone’s behalf.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the completed Delaware log go?
Back to the teen’s driver education teacher, not to the DMV — and the instruction on the form says it should get there before any unsupervised driving begins. Delaware certifies the practice rather than collecting it centrally.
Why does one date sometimes take two rows?
Because the Day/Night column is a pair of checkboxes rather than two time columns. A row belongs to one side of dark, so a date with practice before and after sunset earns a row for each — which is also what makes the 10 night hours demonstrable.
Is Driving Time in hours and minutes or decimals?
The form sets no unit, but the export writes decimal hours — twenty minutes is 0.33 — and the page TOTAL and GRAND TOTAL add up the same way. Whichever you choose when filling it by hand, keep the rows and the totals in the same one.
What does the six-month wording on the certification mean?
The parent or guardian certifies 50 hours of supervised driving completed during the first six months in the Graduated Driver License program. It is a window rather than an open-ended total, so the practice needs planning across those months rather than concentrating at the end.
Do I have to use a driving-log app?
No. The booklet offers a free app alongside the paper pages, and either is acceptable — a hand-filled log is exactly as valid. What matters is that the sheet the teacher receives shows the practice, the night hours and the signatures.
